Guilty!

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I know, I know.  I’ve been an absentee squid.  Not intentionally, but out of necessity.

I’ve gotten lost in my “real” work lately, working on a new book, launching my Beadspiration shop at Etsy, and planning projects to work on the rest of this year. But my intentions are to make a new lens or two or three before the summer is up. That might not sound very ambitious to you, but if I posted my list you’d understand.

Spinning plates is a challenge, and so is Squidoo. I want to give lensmaking my best, so I won’t jump in halfheartedly. In the meantime, I hope you’re building so many lenses, the halls of Squidoo are creaking and swelling from all the activity.

Don’t give up on me. I’ll be back ASAP.

Are You a Day Tripper?

My new Day Trippin’ series was hatched one day while I was tranferring photos from my hard drive to a new external CD-DVRW drive I purchased recently. I thought, Why tuck them away in files when I can share them with people who may not have seen these places for themselves? It’s been fun revisiting each locale, and I hope you’ll enjoy the mini tours.

I began with a lens about Smith Rock State Park, one of the most surprising discoveries (and best-kept secrets, I think) in Oregon. Next came my second Day Trippin’ lens, Crater Lake National Park. Last night I launched the third lens about the Oregon Coast, where we camped two weeks ago.

Day trips are smart. They’re an economical way to grab a quick vacation (some call ‘em staycations because they don’t require major planning) for a time of R&R. This lens series will begin with my own region, and will eventually spread to other areas as well. Our Yosemite trip in March 2007 was a major vacation for us, but for someone closer to that area, it could be an unforgettable day trip. Stay tuned; it’s next in line.

Day Trippin’

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Unless you’re caught in a time warp, you’ve undoubtedly noticed a rise in the cost of utilities, grocery prices, fuel, and more.  A vacation may be out of the question, but a day trip – a staycation – may be just what you need to clear your head. My husband and I have been taking day trips for years, partly because they’re economical, but mostly because they’re fun.

Amazing, how a few hours in any given direction can feel like an adventure. Just pack a picnic and go, or plan to grab lunch along the way. If you’re into photography as I am, take your camera and prepare to record the day in detail.

My latest lens, Day Trippin’, is the first in a series I am planning at Squidoo. This one features Smith Rock State Park, one of central Oregon’s most beautiful destinations. I’m not a travel writer, but I do love sharing photos and describing these day trips as I saw them. Hopefully they’ll spur you to plan a day trip of your own!

The Day the Lights Went Out

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

If you have an elderly friend or family member who has begun using a computer for the first time ever, you’ll appreciate my latest lens. A computer is going to expand their horizons, and along with that expansion comes questions. Lots and lots of questions. Brace yourself.

The Day the Lights Went Out is the true story of my mother’s curiosity and how it got the best of her. In her seventies, she had grown tired and slightly annoyed with all the ads about dot.com this and dot.com that. Every time she switched on the tv or radio, there it was again: Call us, or visit our website at…“  She was determined to find out what the fuss was all about, and what better time? Her birthday was coming up, and she would drop VBHs (Very Big Hints) for a whiz-bang Packard-Bell system like the one she’d seen at Sears.

Visit the lens and discover what happened the day of the big plug-in. It’s enough to make you want to check your fuse box.

Calling All Procrastinators!

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

A funny thing happened on my way to creating my last lens. I sat down to flesh out a topic that I’d thought of yesterday, but something in my noggin’ snapped. Suddenly, I felt an uncanny urge to reply to a long-overdue email (circa 2007) from a friend who had been pestering me for a certain URL. Then the phone rang, and my brother’s voice pulled me into a long conversation. I love my brother. We’re good friends. He doesn’t know the Giant Squid side of me, though, and I’d just as soon keep it that way. He might wonder if my brain has shifted a few cells.

So I made my way back to my home office, where all my lenses are hatched. And a minute or two into my lens-building, I heard a familiar Squeeeeeaaaaak!  Oh, joy! The mail truck had arrived. On the way back from the mailbox, I noticed a two-foot weed in my rock garden under my kitchen window, where daisies, coneflowers, and other heat-loving plants grow. Yanked that thing hard and that was that.

Then back to the lens…

If your WIPs are piling up, this lens is for you. If your ideas exceed your output, this Procrastination Primer is dedicated to you. Squidoo’s Unofficial Procrastination Primer is a lens series that began  today with Chapter 1. I’ll launch another chapter lens soon, if the creek doesn’t rise and a meteor doesn’t hit my roof.
